Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is planning to revive the West Bengal Legislative Council after a resounding victory in the assembly elections of her party and its ally Congress. “We will form the Legislative Council. When Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee arrives here tomorrow, I will talk to him in this regard.” – West Bengal Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee said. Party insiders said the Trinamool chief was contemplating the creation of the Upper House, essentially to accommodate members of the civil society, who have been supporting them against the Left Front government since the days of Singur and Nandigram.

On 21st March 1969, a resolution was passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for the abolition of the Legislative Council. Subsequently, the Parliament passed the West Bengal Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1969 abolishing the Legislative Council with effect from 1 August 1969.
